<갤러리 지우헌>
Gyeonggi Museum of Ceramic Design
Tradition, Revisited, presented at the Gyeonggi Museum of Ceramic Design and Gallery Jiwooheon, explores another strand of Korean ceramic tradition through a contemporary lens, looking beyond the familiar image of Korean ceramics represented by celadon and white porcelain. Focusing on materials and techniques that have a distinct place in the history of Korean ceramics but remain relatively unfamiliar-including earthenware, black-glazed ceramics, onggi, and buncheong with underglaze iron-brown decoration -the exhibition showcases works by six senior, established, and emerging artists. Rather than simply reproducing the ceramics of the past, these artists reinterpret the properties of clay, vessel forms, and pottery-making techniques through their own visual languages and philosophies, demonstrating the broad spectrum of Korean ceramics and its possibilities for contemporary expression. The exhibition brings the Gyeonggi Museum of Ceramic Design's specialized curatorial expertise in ceramics into dialogue with a private cultural space connected to the art market, proposing new ways of viewing Korean ceramics through two venues of distinct character. At the museum, visitors can explore each artist's practice in depth, while at Gallery Jiwooheon, contemporary ceramic art blends naturally with the sensibilities accumulated over time within the distinctive setting of a traditional hanok. Through Tradition, Revisited, we invite you to discover another, perhaps less familiar dimension of Korean ceramics and to explore how a ceramic culture inherited from the past continues to evolve and expand within contemporary life and art.
Gallery JIWOOHEON
Gallery Jiwooheon is an exhibition space operated by Designhouse Inc., situated in Bukchon Hanok Village, one of Seoul's most iconic traditional neighborhoods. Housed within the intimate architecture of a hanok, the gallery has served as a platform for introducing Korean artists to visitors from Korea and abroad, in step with the growing global reach of K-culture. The hanok itself is a monumental work of craftsmanship. Within this distinctive setting, Gallery Jiwooheon has maintained a particular affinity for ceramics, presenting curated exhibitions spanning generations—from rising talents to established names. Today, Korean ceramics have advanced their materials, techniques, and formal vocabulary to become a vital force within contemporary art. As tradition is reinterpreted through a contemporary sensibility, it is receiving renewed attention in art markets both in Korea and abroad. Against this backdrop, Gallery Jiwooheon partners with the Gyeonggi Museum of Ceramic Design to expand the ways in which ceramics can reach wider audiences and gain greater recognition in the art market. As the inaugural presentation of this collaboration, Tradition, Revisited invites you to encounter the unfamiliar allure of ceramics, reimagined by six artists within the space of a hanok.
